Hello,
My 9 nine year old son has decided that he would like to learn to skateboard and, as it's something that I've always fancied, I've decided to learn along with him. What I'm hoping you could help me out with is a nice quiet spot where we can learn / fall off in peace without feeling intimidated by other, better, skateboarders and without being arrested by the police. We live on the Grassmarket in Edinburgh, does anyone know of a spot nearby?
All help will be greatly appreciated
Cheers,

Don't feel intimidated. Other than practicising on the path outside your house, any smooth surface is all that is needed to get youir balance. Once you are comfortable then move onto any of the skateparks.
By and large most skaters enjoy the company of other skaters irrespective of ability. I'm approaching 45 now and still feel a bit wary of going down to the skateparks myslef however after the initial looks of disbelief from some of the kids that may not have seen me before everything is fine.
There are a crowd of older East coast skaters that meet up on a Thursday and over in the West coast there are a number of us that meet up on a Monday with ages ranging from 30 odd to near 50.
Just go for it and have some fun |

Scott,
Thanks for the encouragement. The path on West Port (outside where I live) is pretty steep so I might give it a miss but I guess I am just being silly not wanting to be seen by anyone until I get good, especially as I'll likely be falling off for years to come. Maybe I should just go for a walk and then stop when I find a flat bit to practice on
Cheers, that was a big help

P.s. Do you know how I'd get in touch with the East coast group you mentioned? That sounds like fun |

Bristo square is the spot for you my man. Just up the road and lost of the kids are now at Saughton. I had the place to myself the other day. That is where a thought my son to skate all those years ago. |

yup, bristo square has been the training ground for edinburgh for more than 2 decades now, get up there and let the boy skate free, and catch yerself a wee slappy.
There is a sunken area opposite boardwise that used to be skateable with wee banks and a wee curb, it's away from the street so you and the boys will have fun, try the bottom level of the multistory carpark under the castle, again a well known spot for when its wet with mellow slopes to get yer balance on.
skate tuff oldie and watch yer seed shredddddddddd.... _________________ heart of the city |

I pass by that car park all the time but I assumed there would be security cameras and such to catch skaters out, is it safe to skate there? |
