Skateboard Scotland organised the Annual Scottish Street Championships along with their 2016 AGM on Saturday the 3rd of December at Zone74 Skatepark in East Kilbride. The event was sponsored Focus, Pyramid and Clan Skateshops along with Fundamental Skateboards, Zone 74 skatepark, Edinburgh Local and your lovely Dopezine!
The Skateboard Scotland AGM took place at 11am and offered all Skateboard Scotland members the chance to meet the Skateboard Scotland committee and find out more about what they had been up to over the last twelve months. As usual about three non-board members showed up for the meeting! Skateboarding in the Olympics and how Team GB is going to come together was discussed. Interesting topic and one for future debate, but I have digressed.
There was an under 16 and over 16 competition arranged and the level of the skating was high. The highlights from the under 16 comp were the efforts from Antwan and the two rippers who have missioned it down from Inverness! One of them made a hard flip off the large drop which was gnarly and has been making its way around social media (go find it!). Most people were at the event to see the big guns and the over 16s had certainly made the effort to get to the event from all over the country.
The field consisted of almost 30 entrants and the competition for the top three spots was fierce. Petay Franz was going big and made a beautiful backside nosegrind all along the biggest block which included a revert at the end. Unfortunately his final run was not as good as the qualifying one and he ended up in 5th place. Baillie was also blasting around the park and earned himself 4th place.
The top three were all Glasgow street locals and it was obvious that their training ground at Kelvingrove has helped them get where they are. Tom Shimmin made lots of nice tricks over the fun box and up the Hubba ledge and got 25 quid cash and some clan vouchers from coming in 3rd place.
It was really tight between the top two but Freddie managed to pip Andy white at the post by having an amazing run where he pretty much landed everything he tried and went really big over the fun box and handrail. Another great day of skateboarding in Scotland.
For the next one get along to the War of the Thistles on the first weekend in April!
