Skateboard Scotland organised the annual Scottish street champs on the 19th of January 2019. It was meant to happen in December but this is skateboarding so it didn’t.
Not the warmest time of the year to hang out in the Freezer that is Unit 23’s skatepark in Dumbarton but certainly beats being out in the elements.
With approximately 100 entrants on the day this was one of the best attended Street Champs for a while. I think that it might have helped avoiding the usual Sunday that we have run the event on over the last few years.
The skating on the day was to a high level and the BBC crew that were in attendance certainly enjoyed seeing what everyone could do.
First up the 16 and under comp took place. Finlay was on another level and made some amazing tricks over the hip earning him the top spot.
All these kids skated hard and wound up with a great big pile of product courtesy of the sponsors of the event Clan, Focus, Ecosie, Route 1 and Skateboard Scotland.
16 and Under Final Results:
- 1st Finlay Yates
- 2nd Johnny Brown
- 3rd Innes Donaldson
- 4th Alex Brown
- 5th Fin McLean
The over 16s were fighting for a potential free trip to the UK champs in April (if they happen) and a wedge of cash provided by Skateboard Scotland. Skateboard Scotland will take the top three to the UK champs.
This was some of the best live skateboarding that I have seen for a while in Scotland. The kinked hubba got sessioned hard and loads of rad tricks went down.
Tom Shimmin’s Ollie on and backside flip off the middle section to flat kind of ended the whole comp though!
Over 16 Final Results:
- 1st Tom Shimmin
- 2nd Ross Zajac
- 3rd Lachlan Shaw
- 4th Dan Nichol
- 5th Aaron Jolly
- 6th Geordie Shaw
- 7th Chris Baillie
There was also a girls comp that was fun and mostly involved some younger girls with the winner having been coerced to enter last minute. Funny what you can achieve if you just try.
Girls results:
- 1st Tilly Goodhall
- 2nd Rudi-Rae Morrice
- 3rd Mac Morrice
- 4th Kayleigh White
- 5th Daisy Carslaw
I hope to see more of you at the event later this year.
Next up War of the Thistles!
